OPHI at the HDCA 2016 Conference in Japan

OPHI Director Sabina Alkire and OPHI Research Officer Christian Oldiges attended the 2016 Human Development Capability Approach Annual Conference (September 1-3) organized by the Human Development and Capability Association and hosted by Hitotsubashi University in Tashikawa, Tokyo, Japan.

 "Capability and Diversity in a Global Society” was this year’s conference theme. Plenary speakers included Nobel laureate Amartya Sen (Harvard University), Martha Nussbaum (University of Chicago) and Ravi Kanbur (Cornell University). 

Sabina Alkire chaired the parallel session on "Multidimensional Poverty I’’ and presented two papers: "Measuring Multidimensional Poverty: Dashboards, Union Identification, and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)," co-authored with OPHI Research Officer Gisela Robles, and "Exploring Multidimensional Poverty in China,’’ co-authored with OPHI Research Officer Yangyang Shen. 

Alkire was also part of the panel discussion on welfare economics and the capability approach, together with Amartya Sen, Ravi Kanbur, Kotaro Suzumura (Hitotsubashi University), and Enrica Chiappero (University of Pavia). 

Christian Oldiges chaired the parallel session on "Operationalizing the Capability Approach’’ and presented his paper titled "Measuring Malnutrition and Dietary Diversity: Theory and Evidence from India”.
