The inaugural OPHI Advanced Course on Multidimensional Poverty Measurement and Analysis took place 4-8 August 2025 at the University of Oxford, UK. This new, one-week intensive course was aimed at MPI technicians interested in deepening their knowledge and skills in the use of multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis. The cohort was made up of 42 participants from academic institutions, governments, and international organisations, travelling from 27 countries to join the course.

The course content focused on advanced techniques for multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis, with topics including estimating trends, exploring the possibilities for linked MPIs, and using MPIs to analyse interlinkages among deprivations and intrahousehold and gendered inequality. Participants also learned how to use MPIs for targeting and how to harness Alkire-Foster based methods to improve impact evaluation. Bringing together a network of MPI practitioners, the course also provided a space to discuss shared experiences and use-cases, as well as future directions and possibilities for multidimensional poverty measurement research.

OPHI Director Sabina Alkire, said of the course: “We have been thrilled to be joined by such a committed, international group of MPI leaders seeking to deepen their knowledge of new multidimensional poverty analysis techniques, and extend our own understanding of MPI practice around the world.”

Ricardo Nogales and Fanni Kovesdi, academic directors of the Advanced Course, said: “Congratulations to all of our participants for their hard work this week, and thank you to the OPHI Team for their help making this brand-new course a success. We look forward to continuing the emerging conversations about future MPI projects and research avenues.”
