The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) asked OPHI Director Sabina Alkire to deliver the 21st WIDER Annual Lecture on 24 October, 2017. The Institute’s flagship lecture presents the analysis of an eminent scholar or policy maker who has made a significant contribution in the field of development economics. Previous lecturers have included Amartya Sen, Angus Deaton, Kaushik Basu, Frances Stewart, Tony Atkinson, and Joseph Stiglitz. The event, which is part of UN Day celebrations in Finland, was webcast live here from 3.30pm (UTC+3).

Her lecture, entitled “How are people poor? – Measuring global progress towards zero poverty and the SDGs”, covered the ways in which countries are using the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (Global MPI) and other poverty measures to track achievements in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, in particular, SDG 1, which aims to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.” The lecture, geared to policy-makers as well as academic researchers, was followed by a question and answer session with audience members, as well as a reception.
