OPHI Summer School in China Closed Successfully

Seventy-five participants from 23 countries attended the Summer School on Multidimensional Poverty Analysis 1-13 August 2016. This year, OPHI partnered with the International Poverty Reduction Centre of China (IPRCC) and Beijing Normal University, where the summer school was held. The opening day included substantive lecture by Dr Zuo Changsheng, Director-General of IPRCC, and Professor Li Shi of Beijing Normal University. The two-week course provided a thorough conceptual and technical introduction to some techniques of measuring multidimensional poverty with a strong emphasis on the Alkire Foster method.  Participants revised axiomatic poverty measures, and got an overview of different techniques of multidimensional poverty measurement and which problems they are best suited to solve. The empirical motivation for measuring multidimensional poverty was presented as well as the conceptual motivation, drawing on Amartya Sen’s capability approach.
