MPPN works to advance multidimensional poverty measurement post-2015

At a teleconference call on 31 October 2013, participants of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) shared updates of their recent work to develop new national and sub-national multidimensional poverty measures and recapped the knowledge-sharing taking place between participants. Such ‘South-South learning’ includes recent visits from Brazilian and Mexican representatives to Vietnam to share experiences of building multidimensional measures including measurement design and policy considerations.

In addition, MPPN participants also renewed their commitment to advancing multidimensional poverty measures in the post-2015 development context. Exemplifying how MPPN participants are working together in this arena, Arsenio Balisacan, Minister of Socioeconomic Planning, Philippines, Sabina Alkire, Director of OPHI and Erik Solheim, Chair of the Development Assistance Committee, OECD, will speak about the importance of multidimensional poverty measurement at a joint panel at the European Commission EU Development Days conference, 26-27 November, in Brussels.

The panel discussion ‘Keeping poverty eradication at the heart of post-2015 goals’, 27 November, 12:45 – 14:00 PM, builds on the success of the MPPN event at the UN General Assembly on 24 September 2013. At that event, the governments of Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Philippines and Nigeria, along with representatives of the World Bank, UNDP and the OECD called on the UN to adopt a new multidimensional poverty measure, the MPI2015+ (or MPI 2.0), to track progress toward the new goals adopted after 2015.
