Nigeria MPI
MPI originally introduced: 2018
Latest MPI results: Nigeria MPI 2022
The Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty Index (2022) report uses data from the Multidimensional Poverty Index Survey 2021/2022, the most extensive multidimensional poverty survey in Nigeria to date, designed to provide nationally representative results from all 36 states, FCT Abuja and 109 Senatorial Districts. The MPI survey was carried out between November 2021 and February 2022 and included variables designed to capture a more detailed picture of multidimensional poverty in Nigeria. The Nigeria MPI (2022) includes a linked Child MPI which analyses poverty for children under the age of 5.

Previous results
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) published the first national MPI for Nigeria as part of the National Human Development Report 2018 focusing on advancing development in Northeast Nigeria. The MPI had a structure of 11 indicators grouped within 4 dimensions and was based on the 2017 Human Development Indices Survey.
Nigeria MPI structure: dimensions and indicators
- Poverty Cut-Off Nigeria MPI 2022: A person is considered poor if they are deprived in 26% or more of the 15 weighted indicators.
- Poverty Cut-Off Nigeria Child MPI 2022: A child under 5 is considered poor if they are deprived in 21% or more of the 23 weighted indicators.
- Background: The Nigeria MPI 2022 updates the structure of the Nigeria MPI 2018 following consultations with stakeholder groups that identified the need for additional indicators to reflect the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to highlight child poverty.
Global MPI
The annual global MPI produced by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative in partnership with the Human Development Report Office of the United Nations Development Programme is an internationally comparable index of acute multidimensional poverty.
