Previous results

The Costa Rica MPI was launched in October 2015 by the Ministry of Social Inclusion and Human Development and the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). The national MPI was developed with the support of OPHI and Horizonte Positivo, a non-governmental organisation from the private sector focused on promoting sustainable development. The MPI was based on Costa Rica's National Household Survey, Encuesta Nacional de Hogares (ENAHO), which is conducted annually. Using this data, the first report calculated the incidence of poverty dating back to 2010. The MPI was used to inform budget allocation in social spending.

Costa Rica has also been at the forefront of applying the MPI in the private sector. Horizonte Positivo with the support of SOPHIA Oxford developed a Business MPI based on the National Household Survey to help businesses address the poverty of their employees and contribute to national poverty reduction.
