Leveraging the Multidimensional Poverty Index to Advance Interlinked SDGs (UNGA 78)
We are pleased to announce that the Republic of Panama, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) will be hosting a high-level Side Event on Wednesday 20th September 2023 on the margins of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
Global leaders, heads of state, and international organisations will gather in New York to discuss the topic ‘Leveraging the Multidimensional Poverty Index to Advance Interlinked SDGs’. To target global challenges, countries and international agencies are directing their efforts towards the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Achieving the SDGs will require a renewed focus on the intersecting deprivations experienced by the poorest members of society.
This Side Event aims to place poverty at the centre of the discussion, and profile how Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) are an integral part of a rescue plan for people and the planet. Global leaders will share their experiences and leadership in using MPIs to drive poverty reduction, inform policy actions, and promote well-being.
The Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Dr Rebeca Grynspan, will open the discussion which will feature an eminent panel of speakers moderated by OPHI Director, Professor Sabina Alkire.
The event is organised with the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), a network of senior policymakers from more than 60 countries and 19 international organizations focused on measuring and reducing multidimensional poverty. The Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) functions as the Secretariat of the MPPN.
