Launch of the 2021 global Multidimensional Poverty Index
1 October 2021 – Register to join the online launch of the 2021 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (global MPI) on Thursday 7 October at 16:30 BST (11:30 New York).
The global MPI is an internationally comparable measure of acute multidimensional poverty covering over 100 countries in the developing world. It complements global monetary poverty statistics, such as the World Bank’s $1.90 a day measure, by providing a multidimensional perspective on global poverty.
The global MPI is updated annually and the data are explored in a joint report by OPHI and the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report Office (UNDP HDRO). This year’s report, entitled Unmasking disparities by ethnicity, caste and gender, uses disaggregation and intrahousehold analyses to highlight inequalities along the lines of ethnicity, caste and gender to show who is being left behind and which interlinked deprivations are hindering progress in poverty reduction.
Join our high-level event to discuss the findings and link them to policy action. We are delighted to be joined by the following speakers:
- Achim Steiner, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme
- Mamta Murthi, Vice President for Human Development, World Bank
- Yolande Wright, Global Director Child Poverty, Climate and Urban, Save the Children
- Sabina Alkire, Director, OPHI
- Yanchun Zhang, Chief Statistician, UNDP
- James Foster, Vice Dean and Oliver T. Carr Professor of International Affairs and Professor of Economics, George Washington University
- Anjali Kwatra, Director of Advocacy, Marketing and Communications, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) (moderator)
