Driving multidimensional poverty reduction to secure well-being for all (UNGA 77)
This high-level side event of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly will bring together global leaders to address the use of Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) as a policy tool to eradicate poverty in all its dimensions and secure well-being for all.
Hosted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria and organised with the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), the event is open to all and will take place on Friday 23rd September, 2–4 pm (ET), Millennium Hilton New York, One UN Plaza, New York. It will also be livestreamed on the OPHI YouTube Channel.
As the world confronts a number of crises—environmental, economic, political, and medical—there is a need for countries to reaffirm the commitment of the Sustainable Development Goals to eradicating poverty in all its dimensions and securing well-being for all. Achieving these goals will require a renewed focus on the overlapping deprivations experienced by the poorest members of society and a willingness to explore innovative and multisectoral policies for reducing them. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is a tool that can highlight these issues and help inform their solutions.
The discussion that will be generated by participating heads of state and government and heads of international organisations aims to galvanize action and foster collaboration among institutions and sectors to design sustainable solutions that have a greater impact on people living in poverty and that promote well-being across society. The event will highlight the importance of political leadership to meet these goals.
The event is organized with the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), a network of senior policymakers from more than 60 countries and 19 international organizations focused on measuring and reducing multidimensional poverty. The Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) is the Secretariat of the MPPN.
