Summerschool 2012 – Logistical information

Dear Summer School 2012 Participant,

Congratulation on your successful application. We appreciate your continued efforts to keep in touch with us and look forward to meeting you in Jakarta. During the following weeks, you should be making arrangements for your participation in the summer school (flights, accommodation and course fee payment) and preparing academically for the course.

PRE-COURSE INFORMATION

1. Summer School Preliminary Programme
Attached you will find the preliminary academic programme for the Summer School. The document provides insights of the specific topics involved and the day-by-day structure of the course and the facilitators of each module.

2. Summer School Readings List
We have selected three documents that need to be carefully read before the start of the programme. The articles cover the scope and relevance of the capability approach, a summary of the Alkire and Foster methodology and a practical exercise. The articles are:

3. STATA Skills
Previous knowledge of STATA is a COMPULSORY requirement for those attending to the summer school. This requires you to do the following:
a. Install the software in your computer (preferably version 9.2 or higher).
b. Be able to work with STATA as an intermediate user. We define intermediate user as one who is able to perform at least the following actions: merge and append datasets, create or recode variables at the individual and household level; and, work with numeric and string loops

We strongly recommend you visit these resources to ensure you are a confident intermediate user. If you have any questions or uncertainties about this requirement please feel free to write informally to us and we can discuss.

LOGISTICAL INFORMATION

4. Jakarta Airport
It is recommended that you arrive at either Soekarno-Hatta International Airport or Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport. Both are approximately 30 minutes from the hotel and classroom by taxi. Transportation options from airport to hotel will be shared in the next group email.

5 Summer School Classroom
The Summer School will be hosted by the Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM FEUI) at the Universitas Indonesia, Kampus Salemba ( Jalan Salemba Raya No 4, Jakarta 10430, Indonesia). A campus map will be enclosed in later correspondence.

6. Accommodation
OPHI has arranged modest accommodation at the Atlantic Hotel (Jalan Salemba Raya No 26, Jakarta 10430, Indonesia) 600 metres from the Summer School classroom. Rooms are ensuite and equipped with air conditioning. Wifi is available in the hotel lobby. The cost is $40 USD and $20 USD per room per night for single and double occupancy, respectively (breakfast included). This is where the OPHI team will be staying. We would like to encourage you to join us at this hotel. If you would like to stay in the same hotel and/or share a room with a fellow participant of the same sex, please send an email to me (tery.vantaack@qeh.ox.ac.uk) including the following information:
· check-in date
· check-out date
· single or double occupancy
· if double occupancy, and you would like to stay with a fellow participant, please indicate your gender

6. Summer School Course Fee Payment
Instructions on how to pay for your course fee by wire transfer are enclosed in the invoice emailed to you together with the acceptance letter. If you would like to pay by credit card, please send an email to me (tery.vantaack@qeh.ox.ac.uk) for further instruction. Please ensure you pay your course fee at your earliest convenience or please update me with your plans.

7. HDCA International Conference
The HDCA International Conference is taking place 5-7 September 2012 at Balai Kartini Exhibition and Convension Centre, Jakarta, Indonesia. Please visit http://www.hdca2012.org for more information about the conference. Special rate of $200 for all students and any professional based in a low- to lower-middle income country and $325 for all other professionals expire this 6 August. Regular rate is $270 and $375 respectively. If you are interested in participating in the International Conference, please email me for registration and payment details.

8. Summer School Meals
Meals during the summer school will be mainly the responsibility of each participant. There are cafés and food vendors on campus. We suggest you budget approximately $5-10 USD/day for your meals.
