OPHI and UNDP Regional MPI Briefs

OPHI and UNDP Regional MPI Briefs

The four regional briefs co-published by OPHI and UNDP analyze multidimensional poverty trends and patterns in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean, using microdata from the 2021 global MPI database. As country data allows, the briefs also probe into disparities across subregions and age groups. An additional brief explores the main ways in which countries have approached and reported on multidimensional poverty under Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and reviews the 240 publicly available VNR documents since the launch of the SDGs.

Selected key findings
  • Across pre-pandemic Asia and the Pacific Region (APR), out of the 14 countries with data on trends (covering 3.8 billion people), 13 countries saw significant reductions in MPI.
  • Countries with the highest levels of multidimensional poverty were also those that achieved the largest absolute annualized reductions in multidimensional poverty across the time periods examined. These countries were Honduras (2005/06–2011/12), Nicaragua (2001–2011/12) and Haiti (2012–2016/17).
  • Across 19 of the 36 countries with trend data in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 13 million people moved out of poverty; but there was an increase of 17 million poor people across 16 countries.
  • Only 9 out of 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa that had children as the poorest age cohort in the initial year of study reduced child poverty the fastest between 2010 and 2019.
  • Well over half of multidimensionally poor people in sub-Saharan Africa are children under the age of 18 (321 million children out of 556 million people).
  • Between 2016 and 2021, a total of 41 countries across all regions of the world have submitted 53 Voluntary National Reviews discussing multidimensional poverty.
